Gili Trawangan is the largest island of the Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok and has about 700 inhabitants. Its also called the Gili Party Island. The local language is Sasak. The island is a popular snorkeling and diving destination of backpackers, mostly from Europe and Australia. There is a hotel and several home stays on the east side of the island. On Gili Trawangan there are no motorized vehicles. The locals live mainly from tourism and fishing.

Although Gili Air is closest to the Lombok mainland it is the most overlooked of the three Gili islands in terms of development. However, that is all set to change as the market here is geared very much towards the budget traveller and tropical island explorer. A lot of visitors actually prefer the grass roots atmosphere of Gili Air and the feeling of really being part of a close knit local community.

Lombok offers white sandy beaches, green hills, high volcanoes and turquoise blue sea in tropical temperatures. Overlooked by the 3,726 meter high Gunung Rinjani in the north east, the second largest volcano in Indonesia and significantly higher than Bali's Gunung Agung. Beside him numerous small volcanoes, some still active. All nestled in a lush green and still largely untouched jungle.

How it works:

You get picked up at your hotel or villa by bus which drives you to the harbor of Padangbai. There you can pay your ticket at the office of the fast boat provider. After approx. 1,5 hours on the fast boat you will arrive Lombok or couple of minutes later the Gili Islands. When you get back to Bali the bus will drive you back to your hotel or villa.
